September 23 the M55-consortium presented its study on the feasibility of an underground connection between Amsterdam and Almere via the IJmeer. The research shows that a significant economical alternative is possible in comparison to an earlier variant of a connection by train. Benefits of the proposal of M55 include the phasing of the plan, the use of existing underground infrastructure in Amsterdam and, as a tunnel under IJburg and IJmeer has been proposed, guaranteeing over time the spatial and environmental quality. The government intends to decide in 2012 how to improve the accessibility of Almere.
