In the city of Apeldoorn Zwarts & Jansma designed an underground car park integrating the underground space with the park above.
A large, triangular area close to the centre of Apeldoorn is being used as a recreation area and for parking. The municipality wants to transform this area into a park with an underground car park for 240 vehicles.
The design of Zwarts & Jansma Architects integrates both functions by means of a patio that brings the green and the water of the park into the underground building. Even a part of the local river 'Grift' is lead into the patio, forming a water curtain. Via stairs and an elevator the visitor reaches the park level, right next to a bridge that is part of the main pedestrian route through the park.
The patio provides fresh air, daylight and orientation and gives the visitor a feeling of being outside. It helps saving energy since about 80% less artificial lighting and ventilation is needed.
